Learn how to french braid your own hair in 1-day

A french braid is very easy to do in theory but I feel like the hard part is knowing how to move the strands around and how to hold them. So in this tutorial, I’m showing my hand placement, how to hold the strands when you move them, and how to add hair to the braid! At first, it might be a bit difficult, but with some practice, it will become really easy!

If you find that holding the strands in a different way works really well, then remember that there is no right or wrong way to do it, so as long as it works for you, that’s the right way!

French braids are great for heatless waves! Simply braid your hair in the evening before going to bed with 90% dry hair and when you wake it, undo the braids and then you have beautiful waves!

Double french braid step by step

Time requirement: 15-20 minutes

Skill level: Medium

  1. Split your hair down the back of your head and clip 1 side away with a hair clip so it’s out of the way
  2. Brush your hair through so there are no tangles
  3. Take a tiny section of hair at the front and split it into 3 equal sections
  4. Then take the top strand and cross it over and into the middle
  5. Then take the bottom strand and cross it over and into the middle
  6. – Now the braid has been started off, so now you have to add hair to the braid
  7. So again cross the top strand over and into the middle
  8. Then pick up a new small section of hair on the same side as the top strand
  9. Take the new hair and add it to the middle strand (the same strand you cross over to the middle in step 7)
  10. Again cross the bottom strand over and into the middle
  11. Then pick up a new small section of hair on the same side as the bottom strand
  12. Now take the new hair and add it to the middle strand (the same strand you cross over to the middle in step 10)
  13. Repeat steps 7-12 until there is no more hair to add to the braid
  14. When there is no more hair to add to the braid, then braid the rest of the hair as a 3-strand braid
  15. Now repeat steps 2-14 on the other side, so you get a double french braid
