How to fishtail braid for beginners

a fishtail braid is such a good braid to know how to braid, because you can use it in so many hairstyles as it’s such a versatile braid!

You can do it in the 6 different ways I have shown in the video, but you can also do half up half down, and create a boho hairstyle or use it in beautiful updos for brides or bridesmaids.

How To Fishtail Braid – Easy step by step guide

  1. Split the hair into 2 equal sections, so you have a right and a left section
  2. Grab a small section of hair from the back of the right section
  3. Take the small section and cross it over and add it to the left section
  4. Grab a small section of hair from the back of the left section
  5. Take the small section and cross it over and add it to the right section
  6. Repeat step 2-5 until you reach the end of the hair and tie the braid off

Basic fishtail braid for beginners in a ponytail

A basic fishtail braid is such a great braid to spice up high ponytails! You can also do the fishtail braid in a low ponytail or a nice half up half down!

Double Dutch Fishtail braid

If you are looking for a braid that will give you the bulky look, then a double dutch fishtail braid is to go with! It´s also a great alternative to the “normal” double dutch braid!

French Fishtail braid

A French fishtail braid will take a long time to do if you take small sections as I show in the video, but you can take bigger sections to cut down on the time, but you will lose a bit of the unique fishtail pattern!

Dutch Fishtail braid

This single dutch fishtail braid is one of my favorites to do on myself and it’s very easy to do, once you have the hand placement down! It does take longer than the regular french or dutch braid, but it’s so worth it!

This braid is great for beginners to try as it only has 2 strands. If you have never tried this braid before then pull all your hair to one side, so you can see what you are doing in a mirror!

If you love the look of a french braid, but you want to try something different, then the double french fishtail braid is for you! There is so much detail in this braid and it looks absolutely incredible!
